Hopefully there's nothing in the VRML spec that says anything at all
about HTTP. HTML is similar - web browsers would work mostly fine if
HTTP never existed and all transfers were done over FTP or gopher.
Now the question becomes: can we make the 3D description language and the
transport of documents using that language orthogonal, and still have a
workable, scalable, and sufficiently speedy system? I'd like to suggest the
answer is yes, and hopefully people can suggest references that indicate one
way or another.
