Vatican Library interface

I've done some tweaking to the Vatican Library interface we're serving
from www.ncsa.uiuc.edu (originally by Frans van Hoesel with
contributions by John Ockerbloom); the changes include...

o All images referenced by the interface are now served via http
from www.ncsa.uiuc.edu, not via ftp from seq1.loc.gov.
o All images are now in GIF format (full 256-color, same size).
o Some tweaks to the exhibit text for readability, typos, etc.

The goal of the changes was to increase performance at the client end.
I am also considering reducing the size of all the images to 1280x1024
or less, since xv is not fast at scaling images down to size.

Also, I see LOC is in the process of putting up a 1492 exhibit on
seq1.loc.gov, and that the old Soviet archive is still sitting there
waiting for a hypermedia interface (hint hint hint :-).

Finally, if you didn't catch it the first time around, the URL for the
interface we're serving is...

http://www.ncsa.uiuc.edu/SDG/Experimental/vatican.exhibit/Vatican.exhibit.html

Enjoy,
Marc
