SCO LEVERAGES KEY TECHNOLOGIES TO ENHANCE ITS
HIGH-VOLUME UNIX OPERATING SYSTEM
New Version of SCO OpenServer System Includes Native File
and Print Services for Windows, Robust Backup,
Systems Management, and Localization
SANTA CRUZ, CA (June 17, 1996) -- SCO (NASDAQ:SCOC) today
announced enhancements to its popular SCO OpenServer Release
5 operating system, adding native file and print services
for Windows, robust backup, systems management and expanded
language support for small to medium businesses and
replicated sites. New services include, SCO Advanced File
and Print Server, SCO Doctor Lite and SCO ARCserve/Open Lite
from Cheyenne, as well as language support for French and
German. As an added bonus, customers purchasing the new
release will be able to pre-test additional SCO solutions
with free evaluation CDs of the SCO Vision Family and SCO
ToolWare.
"SCO OpenServer already has proven to be a reliable and
stable platform for handling demanding business critical
applications for thousands of customers in the small to
medium business and replicated site markets," said Scott
McGregor, senior vice president of products for SCO. "By
adding systems monitoring, performance tuning, UNIX system
backup as well as Windows PC file and print services, we are
providing our customers with significant benefits at no
additional cost."
Added Functionality
SCO has incorporated a set of new layered products into SCO
OpenServer Release 5, free of charge, to expand the
functionality of the base operating system and improve
overall system performance. Key components include:
SCO Advanced File and Print Server -- Offers Windows
Friendly support by providing native file and print services
for Windows systems, eliminating the need for additional PC
servers to handle these tasks (single user license).
SCO Doctor Lite -- Allows for improved system
management by monitoring and analyzing performance. Users
can obtain system status, print reports, and view
performance in table, graph or time-line format. SCO Doctor
Lite will also automatically delegate actions to respond to
system alerts such as low memory, decreasing disk space, and
CPU load factor (upgradable to full product).
SCO ARCserve/Open Lite from Cheyenne -- Delivers
robust backup and disaster recovery for a single server
(upgradable to full product, which supports an entire
network, including UNIX environments and networked Windows
PCs).
Along with the layered products, updates to SCO Merge have
been included for increased application support and
performance optimization. Outside of SCO Merge, further
additions include various supplements for advanced hardware
support (updated drivers and adapters), networking, and
administration.
International Flavor
Previously only available in English, the new SCO OpenServer
Release 5 is now available in both French and German,
enabling global enterprise customers to tailor solutions for
specific geographic regions. With the additional language
support, this popular solution becomes easier to use for
small to medium businesses in Europe.
"Market demand was the driving force behind the localization
of SCO OpenServer in these countries," added McGregor. "As
higher volumes of SCO OpenServer continued to ship into
these regions, customers began to require local language
support and we satisfied their requirement with this new
release."
Visionary Tools
For customers purchasing this new release, SCO has included
two promotional, evaluation CDs -- SCO Vision Family and SCO
ToolWare. These CDs enable users to pre-test additional SCO
solutions at no cost before purchasing.
The SCO Vision Family of products is designed to make
Windows to UNIX interoperability seamless and transparent.
The SCO Vision Family promotional CD comes loaded with 30-
day evaluation versions of SCO TermVision, SCO XVision 6,
SCO SuperVision and SCO SQL-Retriever. SCO ToolWare, the
second evaluation CD, provides a set of state-of-the-art
tools as well as information designed to accelerate the
development of applications on the SCO OpenServer Release 5
platform.
The new edition of SCO OpenServer Release 5 is available
immediately through SCO's more than 7000 resellers and 100
distributors worldwide.

in 10-, 25-, 100-, 500-, and unlimited-user increments. SCO
OpenServer User Licenses are cumulative and can be added at any
time. For example, a user requiring a 30-user Enterprise System
would purchase the base system with 5 users, and then add a 25-user
license. If system requirements grew, the user could then purchase
another 10-user license, for a total of 40 users.

license is also available for both the server configurations and the
desktop system. Each SCO SMP License activates an additional CPU.
UPGRADES: Upgrade licenses from previous versions of SCO Open Desktop
to the SCO OpenServer Desktop System, from the SCO UNIX System to
the SCO OpenServer Host System, and the SCO Open Server Network
System, SCO UNIX System with SCO TCP/IP, or the SCO Open Server
Enterprise System to the SCO OpenServer Enterprise System are
available. Upgrades from Release 5.0.0 are not normally needed,
however they are available with no licensing charge by ordering the
Release 5.0.2 CD-ROM or Tape media kits and performing a fresh
installation using the original Certificate of License and
Authenticity. These media kits may also be used to add the new
layered products to existing Release 5.0.0 systems.
Additionally, upgrades from the SCO OpenServer Release 5 Host System
to the SCO OpenServer Release 5 Enterprise System are available to
enable users to easily and cost effectively add networking to their
systems if requirements change. An upgrade from the SCO OpenServer
Release 5 Desktop System to the SCO OpenServer Release 5 Enterprise
System is also available to change a single-user system into a
server system supporting multiple users. Separate upgrades are
similarly available to move from single-user to multiuser SCO Merge.
Each of these upgrades comprises a single license which can be used
to load and activate software from the CD-ROM.
OPTIONAL LAYERED PRODUCTS: The following optional layered products are
available for use with SCO OpenServer Release 5, and are included on
the standard CD-ROM distribution. Licenses for these must be
purchased separately.

NOTES:
(1) All SCO OpenServer Release 5 products (including the SCO
OpenServer Development System) require registration with an SCO
Registration Center. Information regarding the registration of each
product is contained in the SCO Software Registration booklet or is
available on-line in the system documentation.
(2) SCO OpenServer ELF-format object modules operate with SCO
OpenServer or customer-built Dynamic Link libraries, but are not
interoperable with the System V Release 4 binary interface (iABI).
(3) Upgrades to the SCO OpenServer 5 Development System require
supporting proof of purchase; such as, return of Activation Key card,
or copy of original invoice receipt. Contact your appropriate Sales
Operations and Marketing Departments for specific Geography
requirements.
(4) Customers who have Release 5.0.0 of the SCO OpenServer Development
system should not upgrade to Release 5.0.2 unless they are moving to
Release 5.0.2 of their SCO OpenServer operating system. The new SCO
OpenServer 5 Development System package and CD-ROM upgrade include CD-
ROM media to install on either SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.0 or Release
5.0.2. The SCO OpenServer 5 Development System upgrade on tape media
allows for installation only on SCO OpenServer Release 5.0.2.
(5) SVID 3 is supported with minor exceptions. The SCO device/kernel
interfaces differ from SCO UnixWare.
(6) Full hardcopy documentation is included in both the packaged
product and the upgrades, but not in the tape media kit.
(7) Effective July 1, 1996, those SCO OpenServer Development System
Release 5.0.0 products being replaced by 5.0.2 equivalents will be
officially withdrawn from the SCO product offering; however, the
Release 5.0.0 Tape and Diskette Media Kits will remain available.
(8) Effective December 1, 1996, Release 3.0 of the SCO Open Desktop
Development System and Version 4.2 of the SCO UNIX Development System
will be officially withdrawn from the SCO product offering. All SCO
Support Contracts for Release 3.0 of the SCO Open Desktop Development
System and Version 4.2 of the SCO UNIX Development System will be
honored until they expire. After November 30, 1996, SCO will no longer
sell new support contracts, or renewals of existing support contracts,
for these products.
