Introduction
The SPARCserver 600MP series delivers industry-leading application
throughput to the database and NFS file server markets. What's new?
o Multiprocessing increases the number of users and number of
jobs Sun's mid-range and high-end servers can handle.
o The modular MBus design provides performance scalability to
more CPUs, and accommodates the fast pace of technology with
simple CPU upgrades.
o SBus and VME support for I/O expansion offers both the
advantages of new technology and compatibility with existing
standards.
o Server software products enhance the most robust UNIX platform
in the market.
The SPARCserver 600MP series provides the most flexible multiprocessing
solutions for enhanced client-server computing. And it's a great value,
offering 11 to 86 percent lower cost-of-ownership than equivalent
configurations of IBM, HP, and DEC systems.
SPARCserver 630MP: Most cost-effective multiprocessing server
Choice for compute servers requiring up to 128
Mbytes main memory, and for NFS servers requiring
up to 26 Gbytes and 6 Ethernets
SPARCserver 670MP: More expandability in memory capacity, internal
disk capacity, and VME slots
Ideal as a departmental database server, a compute
server for large tasks, or an expandable general-
purpose server
7 available VME slots for additional serial lines
and other communications options
SPARCserver 690MP: The premier server system in Sun's product line
Cost-effective 1.3-Gbyte IPI disks for 52 Gbytes
of storage in very space-efficient packaging
Dual port features to protect access to mission-
critical data from system failures
New SBE/S Option: SBus SCSI/Buffered Ethernet Card combines both a
5-Mbyte/sec SCSI host adapter and an Ethernet
connection in one SBus slot
Ethernet connection supports either thick or
twisted pair media, supports diskless clients,
and has 128-Kbyte local buffer

With the announcement of the SPARCserver 600MP upgrades, Sun has
reaffirmed its commitment to the world's largest RISC/Unix server
installed base. The SS600MP upgrade line has five attractively
priced, expandable offerings that provide tremendous multiprocessor
performance. As is true with all Sun upgrades, these paths also
provide maximum investment protection for the customer's existing
peripherals.
Board exchange upgrades are available for the entire SPARCserver 300
and SPARCserver 400 series, as well as the Sun-3/470. All board
exchanges provide full support of customers existing IPI and SCSI
disk investment with expansion support of the new 1.3GB drives.
All three board exchanges include a single slot GX card, dual CPUs
and 64MB of RAM standard. Additional CPUs and memory are available
through the use of standard x-options.
For older generation deskside and server products, Sun offers two
aggressively priced enclosure exchange upgrades. Sun-3/160, 3/260
and 4/260 machines have a path to a SPARCserver 670MP with a bundled
single slot GX card, CDROM and a high performance 1.3GB SCSI disk.
Customers moving to multiprocessor performance from Sun-3/180,
3/280, 3/480 and 4/280 rackmounted fileservers have a path to a dual
CPU, 64MB SPARCserver 690MP that includes both a CDROM and 2 1.3GB
IPI disks. Like all SPARCserver 600MP upgrades, CPU MBus modules and
additional memory are available to these paths as x-options.
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Features Benefits
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Board Exchanges:
================
IPI and SCSI Disk Support Investment protection for
existing disks
Bundled Single-Slot GX Accelerated 8-bit Color graphics
Preserves SBus slots for additional
expansion
Supports existing Analog Mono
monitors in accelerated greyscale
64MB Standard Large capacity for memory-
intensive applications
Economical industry-standard
SIMMs
ECC memory for data integrity
Expandable using standard x-options
MBus Maximum flexibility for
adding additional CPU's
Easy to upgrade to new faster
CPUs in the future
SIMM Migration Preserves existing SIMM
(4/370 and 4/390 only) investment
SBus Expansion Access to the latest SBus options:
-High-speed serial interface
-SBus Prestoserve
-SPARC printer interface
-Serial parallel controller
-Third-party options
Support of Current Options Easy to take advantage of higher
performance disk, tape and
communications options without
sacrificing existing IPI or SCSI
disks.
Enclosure Exchanges
-------------------
New Enclosure Access to the latest options
Enhanced future upgradeability
Bundled SunCD Easy software loading and updates
Access to the latest CD-only offerings
Large Capacity Disks Makes an easy transition from existing
lower capacity, lower reliability SMD
drives.
HARDWARE CONSIDERATIONS
-----------------------
- SPARCserver 600MP software is available on CD-ROM media only. Access
to a SunCD is required to install this upgrade.
- SMD disk drives and controllers are not supported on SPARCserver
600MP upgrades. Early testing showed them to be a bottleneck to
overall system performance.
- SPARCserver 600MP upgrades do not support previous generation memory
except for qualified SIMMs from SPARCserver 370 and 390 machines.
- Upgrades to SPARCserver 600MP systems only support included GX or
optional ECL monochrome frame buffers. Other VME, P4 or SBus graphics
are not supported.
- VME Prestoserve cards do not support NFS acceleration on disks
connected to SBus-based controllers, like the SCSI disks on the
SS670MP.
- Customers with ECL monochrome monitors will need to purchase an SBus
monochrome frame buffer (UG-MFB-G) to connect them to SPARCserver
600MP upgrades.
- Enclosure exchange upgrades to the SS690MP do not include a frame
buffer. Customers requiring ECL monochrome video should order the
SBus monochrome frame buffer, UG-MFB-G.
SOFTWARE CONSIDERATIONS
-----------------------
- SunOS 4.1.2 is required for all S600MP upgrades. 4.1.2 is binary
compatible with SunOS 4.1 applications.
- Customers running Sun FDDI/DX (dual attach VME) will require
FDA-2.0-4-4-21 version 2.0 software
- Customers with NC400 NFS accelerator boards will require
SNC-1.0-4.1.2-4-21U Sun Network CoProcessor version 1.0 software.
- Migration of Sun Prestoserve requires PRE-2.3-4.1-4-21U Sun
Prestoserve version 2.3 software.
- SunDBE for 4.1.2 and the SPARCserver 600 family is not available
at this time. Sun does, however, intend to release an update for
SS600MP platforms at a later date.
