Five leading computer and software companies jointly announced Open Desktop, a software product that is intended to provide users of personal computers based on the Intel Corporation 80386 chip with many of the features of technical work stations. Open Desktop will be available in the third quarter of this year, with prices starting at $995.

To be produced and sold by Santa Cruz Operation Inc. of Santa Cruz, Calif., Open Workshop allows the use of programs written for the MS-DOS, Xenix and Unix Systems V operating systems with a common graphics interface, as well as networking and data base functions. Santa Cruz Operation collaborated on Open Desktop with Locus Computing; Digital Equipment; Relational Technology, and Tandy. Tandy will be the first licensee for the product.
