I am looking for beta testers for 1.6.23 (IBM version initially).
People can fetch the diffs from ftp.cs.vu.nl in the directory
minix/1.6.23. See the READ_ME file. The Install shell script
will help install the diffs.

Please report bugs, problems, etc. to me.

I have been asked to post a summary of what has changed since 1.5
No can do. The diffs are something like 7 megabytes. An awful lot
has changed. The biggest changes are the move towards POSIX and the
new file system (which allows disks up to 4G). There are thousands of
other changes. In general, 1.6.23 is MUCH better than all previous
versions, and seems pretty stable. I have been running it for months
without too many problems (except once in a while the floppy disk driver
seems to have trouble--this may be my medium detection algorithm).

The direction I want to go is more POSIX. There is also some work on
microkernels going on, but whether that will go in or not depends on
how it develops.

One known bug is curses. Does anyone have a curses library and header that
is complete and works?

Just in time for all your Christmas stockings, the second beta release of
MINIX 1.6.24 (henceforth called 1.6.24b) for the Intel CPUs is available This
is similar to the first beta release, but with a lot of minor improvements all
over the place, and many bugs fixed. It has been tested with both the new
ANSI ACK compiler (definitely the preferred one), and the original K&R ACK
compiler. Except for a few minor problems, the K&R compiler works ok, although
it tends to issue warning messages a fair amount. The ANSI compiler does this
less due to the presence of prototypes. The entire MINIX code is now written
in ANSI C, and is about 80% of the way there to compatibility with POSIX
1003.1 1990 (ISO 9945-1). Chapters 3, 4, 5, and 6 of 9945-1 have been
implemented. All that is left are a few small items in those chapters, plus
Chap. 7 (terminal stuff).

Please fetch the contents of the minix/1.6.24b directory from ftp.cs.vu.nl
(192.31.231.42) and see the READ_ME file. For people without FTP access, is
there an archive site available to store the cdiffs?

Please report bugs on the net. After the dust settles, I will fix any remaining
bugs and then make this the official version for a while.

Happy Holidays.
