New UnixWare 7 Release Delivers Data Center Capabilities for Volume Server
Systems, Leverages New Intel Processors and Is Key Step toward "Monterey 64"
CeBIT '99, Hanover, Germany (March 18, 1999) - During a CeBIT press
conference today, SCO (NASDAQ:SCOC), together with leading enterprise
partners, announced UnixWare 7 Data Center Edition - the most powerful and
advanced server operating environment for volume Intel servers. It is the
first operating system to fully exploit the new generation of Intel
processors and a key milestone on the path to "Monterey 64".
"This release is an important milestone that marks a new era of data center
computing," said Ray Anderson, senior vice president of Marketing at SCO.
"Today, SCO is delivering the power that volume Intel systems need to move
into the data center. Large enterprises can now adopt a high-volume,

Built for Large Scale Computing
UnixWare 7 Data Center Edition is designed and tuned for data center
applications on the highest-end, multi-processing Intel servers, including
unprecedented database performance for the demanding data mining and data
warehousing tasks. It achieves levels of reliability, scalability and
capacity never before seen in any volume operating system.
Rock-solid Reliability and Availability: System enhancements provide for
10,000 hours Mean Time Before Software Stops (MTBSS), translating into
about one hour of planned and unplanned downtime per year, or 99.99%
availability. With UnixWare clustering, downtime is virtually eliminated.
Unparalleled Scalability and Capacity: UnixWare 7 Data Center Edition ships
standard with support for 32GB of main memory and eight processors. By
licensing support for additional CPUs, these can be expanded to 64GB and 32
processors, which is far beyond the capabilities of other volume Intel
based systems and beyond most RISC based UNIX systems.
UnixWare 7 Data Center Edition ships with licenses for 150 users, which can
be dynamically extended by simply increasing the user license count to
support thousands of users. Networking improvements have resulted in a
significant increase in TCP/IP scalability and performance.
The new edition supports data center-class diagnostics with an SQL-based
system and application event log and reporting tool. This provides for
auditing and alert processing, using sophisticated query-based reporting
mechanisms. Comprehensive management of complex data center environments
can now be handled by extracting information using standard SQL-based
tools. The system also includes built-in disk striping, mirroring and
spanning.

UnixWare 7 Data Center Edition provides optimal support for the new

High-Volume Model Moves Up-Market; New UnixWare Hits Milestone
Along "Project Monterey" Roadmap
CeBIT '99, Hanover, Germany (March 18, 1999) - SCO (NASDAQ: SCOC) and
industry-leading enterprise partners today introduced the beginning of new
era in data center computing that delivers the benefits of "volume
economics". Driving this change are the latest generation of Intel
multiprocessor-based servers and the new UnixWare 7 Data Center Edition,
offering advanced data center capabilities for IA-32 systems and
compatibility with the forthcoming "Monterey 64" UNIX operating system.
The volume economic model derives benefits from the pervasiveness of
commodity hardware and software platforms. With the arrival of
high-powered, high-volume enterprise servers and operating systems, this
model is moving up into the enterprise and data center.
"The high-volume model is a pragmatic approach that delivers what's
important to customers, such as improved performance, higher quality,
better affordability and wider application availability," said Doug

SCO and its OEM partners drive a huge portion of a worldwide UNIX business
that totals billions of dollars every year. Their support clearly indicates
that the move to a high-volume model continues to gain momentum."
Many of today's midrange and high-end systems that run data center and
"glass house" operations require custom-built applications, tools and other
components. Businesses today are seeking to control costs, increase
flexibility, and adopt new technologies, while still maintaining the
stability and reliability of their systems.
"Large organizations depend upon standards-based, interoperable, scalable,
manageable operating environments," said Dan Kusnetzky, director of
operating environment and serverware research at International Data
Corporation (IDC). "As these organizations adopt today's high end
Intel-based systems and tomorrow's IA64-based systems, these operating
environments become even more important. After all, over 50% of all UNIX
server operating environments ran on Intel-based systems in 1998."
According to IDC, the UnixWare operating system is currently the fastest
growing UNIX server operating environment in the industry. By 2002, IDC
predicts the UNIX market for Intel processor-based systems will double in
volume and triple in revenue.*

SCO Delivers Solid Roadmap for the New Millennium
The new UnixWare 7 Data Center Edition is a direct result of the data
center initiative announced in February 1998, between SCO, Compaq, Data
General, ICL and Unisys. This release enables large enterprises to deploy
high-powered, volume Intel systems immediately, with a solid 32-bit and
64-bit roadmap to the future. The new UnixWare release is an integral
component of "Project Monterey", a joint project of SCO, IBM, Intel, and
Sequent to deliver a single UNIX product line for current and future 32-bit
and 64-bit systems.
