ABSTRACT:
SCO MPX release 1.1.0 transforms a 386- or 486-based microcomputer
running SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Version 2.0 from a
traditional uniprocessor computer into a powerful multiprocessor
workstation, server, or minicomputer.
AVAILABILITY:
SCO MPX Release 1.1.0 is anticipated to be available for limited
first customer shipments on November 21, 1990, with full volume
shipments anticipated by mid-December. The SCO MPX Release 1.1.0
Direct Update is anticipated to be available by late-December.

DESCRIPTION:
SCO MPX Release 1.1.0 is a supplement to the SCO UNIX
System V/386 Release 3.2 Operating System Version 2.0 and Open
Desktop that transforms a 386- or 486-based multiprocessor
microcomputer into a powerful workstation, server, or
minicomputer. When one SCO MPX package is added for each
additional processor, SCO UNIX System V/386 or Open Desktop can
support up to 29 additional processors, dramatically improving
performance. SCO MPX supports all SCO UNIX System V/386 and
Open Desktop features.
After Version 2.0 of the SCO UNIX System is installed on the
first processor, each additional SCO MPX package enables another
processor to share the processing of the system's total workload.
Automatic load balancing distributes system and application
processing among all the available processors, and requires no
changes to either applications or drivers. This transparent
multiprocessor support is ideal for customers who need to
increase system performance without replacing hardware or
software.
SCO MPX maintains 100 percent application and device-driver
binary compatibility with the SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2
Operating System Version 2.0. The application does not need to
know whether it runs on a uniprocessor UNIX System or on a
multiprocessor system with SCO MPX. Therefore, any software
which had previously run on a uniprocessor version of SCO UNIX
System V/386 will run ``out of the box'' on SCO MPX. A large
proportion of the SCO UNIX System drivers have been
``multithreaded.'' Drivers which have not been multithreaded
will run on a ``default'' processor.
SCO MPX is based on a symmetric multiprocessing architecture,
which means that all processors in the machine can execute both
system and user tasks. Therefore, each additional processor
contributes equally to the overall processing power of the
system. SCO MPX retains the same standards conformance as SCO
UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Version 2.0, including the AT&T
SVID, IEEE POSIX, and FIPS-151 POSIX. Like SCO UNIX System V/386
and Open Desktop, SCO MPX is also designed to meet the U.S.
government criteria for C2-level security.
APPLICATION:
SCO MPX takes the SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2
Operating System Version 2.0 from a multiuser, multitasking
operating system sharing a single processor to one that takes
full advantage of all processors on a multiprocessor computer.
Thus, SCO MPX can increase the performance of these machines to
the level of high-performance servers and "super-microcomputers."
Because SCO MPX takes maximum advantage of all processors, it
provides an ideal solution to the CPU bottleneck problem.
SCO MPX provides a high degree of flexibility: where an
additional processor can be added, an additional SCO MPX package
can be installed easily, up to the limit of twenty-nine (29) SCO
MPX packages.

(2) SCO MPX Release 1.0 will continue to be available to end
users running Open Desktop Release 1.0.
(3) COMPAQ SYSTEMPRO users need to install the Compaq EISA
supplement after installing SCO MPX in order to take full
advantage of EISA and Disk Array drives.
(4) End users running SCO MPX Release 1.0 on SCO UNIX System
V/386 Release 3.2 Version 2.0 will be able to obtain a No-Charge
Update to Release 1.1 through the SCO Technical Support
Department. A direct-mail announcement will be sent to all
registered end users of SCO MPX Release 1.0 end users notifying
them of the No-Charge Update. The SCO MPX Release 1.1 No-Charge
Update is ``unintelligent'' in that it requires a complete
reinstallation of both system software and application packages.
(5) Those end users who are currently running SCO MPX Release 1.0
on earlier versions of SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 will
first need to obtain the SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2
Operating System Version 2.0 Direct Update. After updating to
SCO UNIX System V/386 Release 3.2 Version 2.0, they will be able
to install SCO MPX Release 1.1.
