You've just done it.
For ongoing, in-depth info on Linux's DOS emulator, I'd recommend joining
the "MSDOS" channel on the linux-activists e-mail list. Send an empty message
to "linux-activists-request@niksula.hut.fi" for instructions on how to do it.
(It's *not* your average list-server.)
I've taken the liberty of copying this message to the MSDOS channel of the
linux-activists list as well... so you may receive responses even before
(right, folks?) you join the list.

Just a quick check: the channel seems to be essentially dead. Maybe
nobody is really that interested in running DOS apps (no skin off my
nose), and I haven't seen a message here for a month or so. In fact, I
doubt the msdos emulator will work at all under 0.98pl5 - the code space
writing checks will probably kill the current emulator dead in its
tracks when it tries to set up the low 1MB..
Has somebody even tried to run the msdos emu on a new kernel? I deleted
it after my initial testings: I really don't do anything with it, as the
only programs I could run on it were "misbegotten".

Well, I actually am interested in running MS-DOS apps on my linux box,
and I imagine that a lot of other people as well. Unfortunately, like
many other people, I've been too busy lately, and it hasn't risen high
enough on my priority list. As people find time and start working on it
again, I wouldn't be surprised if this channel ressurects itself. :-)
The main problem with emulator was it simply wasn't complete enough;
most of the more complicated programs that I wanted to run were just
bombing out on it. That's nothing that time and additional work
wouldn't fix, but someone needs to be able to put in that time.
- Ted
P.S. I've just tried running it on the new kernel, and it does in fact
crash and burn with a general protection error.

I think interest will wax and wane in the future. From reading this list,
it appears that new kernel changes often require, essentially, a complete
re-write of the current MSDOS emulator patches. This takes time, and may
be difficult to do in short periods during a heavy academic semester
(especially since another new kernel will probably be out before the
previous re-write was complete -- this can be very frustrating, and would
tend to make people put off the re-write until they have a larger stretch
of contiguous time). Therefore, I'd definately look for more progress over
the winter break, or next summer.
I was very excited to hear that the MSDOS emulator worked at some point,
and I'd like it to work in the future. I don't have many DOS applications
that I want to run, but if I could get one or two working, I could
essentially stay in Linux all the time. I imagine that many other people
have the same situation.
