[Linux-streams] LiS-2.12 Dave Grothe Wed, 25 Apr 2001 07:03:21 -0700 Hello everybody, LiS-2.12 has emerged from the land of Beta testing and is now available on the Gcom FTP site. Just connect your browser to http://www.gcom.com and select Linux-->LiS to get to the LiS documentation. Click the Download button to get a copy. The documentation goes into some detail about what is new in LiS-2.12. The main thing is that it now uses all the CPUs aggressively on 2.4 kernels. There is a queue runner process for each CPU. LiS-2.12 also has more insulation between STREAMS drivers and kernel functions. Also, the base major number for STREAMS drivers has been moved to 240 for all kernel versions. Hopefully the kernel guys will fix the 8-bit major number problem for 2.6 and then we can get a permanent block of majors assigned to LiS. Driver writers will need to recompile in the context of LiS-2.12 include files. The resulting driver binaries can then be used on either 2.2 or 2.4 kernels provided that the drivers use the LiS abstractions of kernel functions rather than calling kernel routines directly. Some people have reported difficulties with SuSE 7.1 due to incompatibilities between kernel configuration files and the kernel binary that comes as the default kernel. So if you are installing LiS on that distribution be on the alert for problems. You might have to hack the LiS config.in file by hand to get some of the options such as SMP and Mod-versions set correctly. -- Dave _______________________________________________ Linux-streams mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://gsyc.escet.urjc.es/mailman/listinfo/linux-streams
