My earlier post was a little over the top.
There was a point I was trying to make. I used to work for SGI, with (not for)
the Inventor group. The file format is, to the best of my understanding,
public domain. The Inventor group knows about this list and someone from there
should be posting the definitive answer soon. In any case, there seems to be
some confusion between the API, which is not public domain, and the file
format, which is. I am not suggesting that we adopt the Inventor development
libraries, or even the complete Inventor file format. I'm suggesting that
people take a look at the way Inventor is structured. It is a very robust
object description language and should work very well for VRML, which is also
an object description language at its core.
