PHIL, TECH: graceful degradation

I had a chance to examine early developers' manuals for both General Magic's
Mgicap and Kaleida's Telescript, and both of these languages explicitly
addressed the need for graceful degradation of object representation
depending on the capabilites of the display device. Unfortunately, I signed
an NDA and this was a while ago. Can anyone from either organization comment
to the fullest practical extent, please?
