I came across an Inline Images FAQ that might be of use to you. It
covers such things as inline images vs. external viewers, colour
mapping, GIFs and JPEGs, browser capabilities, image manipulation tools,
and tips and tricks.
The FAQ is posted to the following newsgroups:
comp.infosystems.www.providers, comp.infosystems.www.users,
alt.graphics.pixutils and comp.graphics
and is maintained by Brian Patrick Lee (blee@media-lab.media.mit.edu)
I hope this helps.
Regards,
Cecilia
