WWW/HTTP novice question - firewall

Anyone willing to help a neophyte get into the web?

A local proxy command called "itelnet" will let me get out
to the internet, but I can't seem to get any HTTP commands
to work once I've made contact. For instance,

>itelnet pulua.hcc.hawaii.edu 80
Trying 129.150.254.2 ...
Connected to sun-barr.ebay.sun.com.
Escape character is '^]'.
(to) Trying 128.171.20.2 ...
connected to pulua.hcc.Hawaii.Edu
GET /guide/.demo.hotlist.txt
599 Unrecognised method name: `GET'.
Connection closed by foreign host.

Thanks for any info/pointers.
