who validates?

If you use GNU-emacs (and who doesn't?) to prepare your text files,
you can configure it to an SGML-aware mode with a set of declarations
available together with the excellent sgmls parser developed by James
Clark. This can be tweaked to do a lot of validation on the fly, and (of
course) invoke the parser on the text, in just the same way as you can
tweak emacs to run lint (etc) for you on other kinds of document.
This combination would enable you to make sure your document was at
least syntactically valid HTML, though whether it will look nice when
your browser gets at it is of course another question (enter one dead
horse, well flogged)
sgmls is available for anon ftp all over the place: I got my copy
from sgml1.ex.ac.uk
