Any WWW-interested folks within hailing distance of Southampton
should consider taking a look at Microcosm, esp. to note how it
might interact in interesting ways with web-based technologies.

Association for Learning Technology Workshop
============================================

Building Resource-Based Learning Environments
- ---------------------------------------------
Using Hypermedia Systems
- ------------------------

Presenters: Wendy Hall, Gerard Hutchings & Hugh Davis

Date: Tuesday July 13th 1993

Duration: 10.00 - 16.30

Venue: University of Southampton

Objective:

The main objective of this workshop is to show how the new generation of
open hypermedia systems, such as Microcosm, can be used to build
richly-resourced, multimedia learning environments. Participants will be
introduced to authoring in Microcosm and shown how this environment is
being used to create a campus-wide structure for multimedia learning.
Examples of material developed as part of the project will be used as
illustrations. Participants will also be shown how existing applications
can be integrated into such an environment and linked to the multimedia
material in the resource-base.

Programme:

10:00-10:30 Registration & Coffee

10:30-12:30 Introduction
Review of existing systems, the need for open
systems, overview of Microcosm

12:30-13:30 Lunch

13:30-15:00 Authoring in Microcosm
Examples of the use of Microcosm to include:
Human Morphology
Engineering
Biology
History

15:00-15:30 Tea

15:30-16:30 Microcosm as the basis for a resource-based learning strategy
Open learning systems for the future

16:30 Depart

Coffee, lunch, tea provided.

Registration fee: #50.00 for ALT members; #100.00 for non-members.

About the organisers:

Wendy Hall is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of
Southampton. She is co-Director of the Image and Media research group at
Southampton and also co-Director of the University's Teaching and
Technology Learning (TLTP) Project. Her research interests include the
development of hypermedia interfaces for multimedia information systems.
She is a co-founder of the Microcosm project at Southampton.

Hugh Davis is a Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of
Southampton and was a founder member of the Microcosm project. He has been
project manager for the past two years and in this capacity has worked
closely with a number of projects that are using Microcosm as a basis for
multimedia information system development. His research interests include
the design and application of open hypermedia systems.

Gerard Hutchings is a Researcher in Computer Science at the University of
Southampton and is currently working on the TLTP Biodiversity Consortium
Project on the development of multimedia information systems for use in the
teaching of Biology. He has many years research experience in the
