Description: The pathauto module automatically generates path aliases for various kinds of content (nodes, categories, users) without requiring the user to manually specify the path alias. This allows you to get aliases like /category/my-node-title.html instead of /node/123. The aliases are based upon a "pattern" system which the administrator can control.

Version Compatability Note: You must use the version of Pathauto that corresponds to your Drupal installation (e.g. 4.7, 5.x etc.) Pathauto currently has two branches that are being maintained to varying degrees.

• Pathauto 5.x-1.x is updated for Drupal5.0. The 5.x-1.2 version is the feature complete port of the 4.7 version and is unlikely to see further development.Transliteration has changed for 5.x so you will need to read the INSTALL.txt if you used pathauto previously and expect transliteration to work the same (it won't!).
• Pathauto 5.x-2.x-dev is the home of new features and fun new code. It may not be stable, but your help in testing is appreciated and it should generally be as usable as the 5.x-1.1 version. Note To test Pathauto 5.x-2 you should use the 5.x-1.8 version of Token module. You will also need to use PHP4.4 or PHP5.1 or higher versions.
• Pathauto for 4.7 still gets bug fixes for critical bugs but is not as well supported as the 5.x version.
• Pathauto for 4.6 is currently unmaintained - you should really upgrade and should not use this version any more.

Please always use this project's issue tracker to report bugs, support and/or feature requests. that is a much more reliable way to get a response than forums, mailing lists, or personal emails.

Help Make Pathauto Better: As of November 2006 I am actively seeking a co-maintainer for Pathauto. The goal is to have multiple people working to patch bugs and provide new features. If you are interested in this, please contact me. Before contacting please show your interest by reading through the issue queue, providing some reviews, and/or patches that improve the module.

Security Note: Certain versions of pathauto_node.inc had a XSS security vulnerability. If you downloaded/installed Pathauto prior to 31 August 2006 then your site might be vulnerable to this attack. To determine if the version of pathauto you downloaded is vulnerable, see the Security Announcement. It is highly encouraged to update your pathauto installations if you are affected by this issue.

Performance Note: Index aliases are slow and buggy. Please don't use them. They were ported to the 5.x-1.x version of pathauto for "feature completeness" sake but will likely be dropped from future versions. See the issue about removing them and issues about them being slow for more details.
