Types and Subtypes
The following list show the subtypes that NCSA Mosaic recognizes initially.text
Textual information. Recognized subtypes are:- text/plain
- plain unformatted text
- text/html
- HTML document
- text/richtext
- a document in Microsoft's RTF (rich text format).
audio
Sound data. Recognized subtypes are:- audio/basic
- AU format audio
- audio/x-aiff
- AIFF format audio
image
Still image data. Recognized subtypes are:- image/jpeg
- JPEG format
- image/gif
- GIF (Graphics Interchange Format) image
- image/tiff
- TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) image
- image/x-pict
- PICT image. (Macintosh-only format)
- image/x-xbm
- X bitmap image
video
Moving images. Recognized subtypes are:- video/mpeg
- MPEG movie
- video/quicktime
- QuickTime movie
application
Some other kind of data, usually to be processed by another application. Recognized subtypes are:- application/octet-stream
- uninterpreted binary data
- application/mac-binhex
- file encoded in the BinHexed format
- application/macbinary
- file encoded in MacBinary format
- application/macwriteii
- MacWrite II document
- application/msword
- Microsoft World document
- application/postscript
- PostScript file
- application/zip
- file compressed with PKZip (a compression format common in the IBM PC world)
